Programme description

Study without compromise and what is the most interesting for you within six faculties! Interfaculty Individual Studies in the Humanities (MISH) are interdisciplinary studies created for those with broad humanistic and social interests. They meet the new demand for comprehensive education, giving a unique opportunity to study for independent, creative and responsible people. The student has the opportunity to implement the programme at six faculties:

  • Faculty of Polish Studies,
  • Faculty of History,
  • Faculty of Philosophy,
  • Faculty of Philology,
  • Faculty of International and Political Studies and
  • Faculty of Management and Social Communication.

Beginning the first year of studies, in consultation with the research tutor, students can organise their course of study using the curriculum offered by the JU faculties that participate in the MISH programme. The diploma of the chosen leading programme is obtained after passing the compulsory programme, joint courses with the MISH and courses in the humanities and social sciences, which are in the didactic offer of the faculties co-creating MISH. Enriching the study with interdisciplinary elements and supplementing the acquired knowledge with various humanities and social sciences methodology significantly increases innovativeness and scientific thinking.

The unique formula of studies is demanding but also motivating. Up to 10% of MISH students can boast of receiving a scholarship from the Minister of Science and Higher Education.

Centre for Interdisiciplinary Individual Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences

Interfaculty Individual Studies in the Humanities were established in 2001 on the initiative of three faculties: Philological, Historical and Philosophical. Since the beginning of the unit's existence, the following faculties have applied for co-creation: the Faculty of Polish Studies (previously part of the Faculty of Philology), the Faculty of Management and Social Communication and the Faculty of International and Political Studies. In March 2017, the unit running MISH changed its name to the Centre for Interdisciplinary Individual Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences, which resulted from amendments implemented in the Higher Education Act.

Curriculum overview

MISH studies enable the implementation of individual leading programme in individual and interdisciplinary studies. They are intended for outstandingly talented candidates with broad social and humanistic interests.

The form of education within the Interfaculty Individual Studies in the Humanities consists in organising, in consultation with the research tutor from the first year of study programme, implementing the required minimum of the leading programme and using the curriculum offer of MISH faculties. In addition, the student can conduct research activities under the guidance of their tutor. This model of education corresponds to the requirements of modern times, and at the same time, it is a return to the sources of the University's ideas.

Student’s life

Time spent at the university is not all about education and class participation; it is also an excellent opportunity to develop hobbies and interests. Many research societies and student organizations operate at the Jagiellonian University, including faculty- and university-wide ones. These societies allow students to spend their free time actively, gain knowledge, develop their talents, participate in engaging, unconventional projects, go on research and team-building trips, participate in conferences, and meet fellow students outside the lecture halls. Students of Interfaculty Individual Studies in the Humanities may engage in the activities of numerous student research groups at faculties cooperating within the MISH or in the activities of the MISH Student Research Group at the Jagiellonian University. It is an interdisciplinary group promoting original, creative projects that cannot be classified within one humanities field and actively cooperating with other research societies.

Students interested in the international dimension of studying can participate in a wide variety of exchange programmes, such as Erasmus+, CEEPUS, Utrecht Network, bilateral exchange programmes, European university Una Europa, or the domestic mobility programme called MOST.

What alumni say about us

Aleksandra, leading programme – Editorial Studies
MISH is a study programme that allows you to take advantage of the wealth of humanities and social sciences offered to students by the Jagiellonian University. For me, it was an extraordinary opportunity to develop my scientific passions without any restrictions, exploring the issues I was interested in during classes in various faculties. These studies undoubtedly broaden the horizons, teach openness and give you a range of comprehensive skills needed to find your place in the labour market. It was also invaluable to exchange experiences with real enthusiasts of various fields of science, such as MISH students.
