Programme description

Studies in the Mathematics and Natural Sciences (SMP) is a modern way of studying at the faculties of mathematics and natural sciences of the Jagiellonian University (27 fields to choose from Astronomy, Astrophysics and Cosmology, Biophysics, Biology, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, Biotechnology, Molecular Biotechnology, Molecular and Cellular Biophysics, Chemistry, Medical Chemistry, Sustainable Chemistry, Spatial E-Planning, Physics, Physics for Business, Geology, Geography, Geography and Spatial Planning, Computer Science, Analytical Computer Science, Applied Computer Science, Computer Science of Video Games, Mathematics, Computer Mathematics, Neurobiology, Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology and Natural Resources Management). The student has the opportunity to implement the programme at six faculties:

What makes SMP programme special?

Individual course of studies from the beginning, under a tutor's supervision (scientific supervisor). Each student chooses interesting courses from the entire range of mathematics and natural sciences faculties.

Interdisciplinarity - is the opportunity of attending courses related to various fields. The leading programme (one of twenty-one) pre-selection takes place in the first year of study and the final at the end of the second year. Note: certain restrictions limit the freedom to choose the leading study programme. After completing the first degree (3 years), the graduate obtains a bachelor's degree in the selected field. In the case of continuing studies in the mode of SMP studies at the second degree (2 years) and their completion, the graduate obtains a master's degree in one of the twenty-two study programmes.

Developing independence, shaping the ability to make choices, arousing interest, unique development opportunities for each student and early involvement in scientific work result in excellent preparation of SMP listeners for different life paths. The previous experience (studies have been operating since 1993/94) shows that SMP students are distinguished by their academic achievements, collecting numerous awards and scholarships.

Curriculum overview

SMP studies enable the implementation of individual leading programme in individual and interdisciplinary studies. They are intended for outstandingly talented candidates with broad exact and natural interests.

The form of education within the Studies in the Mathematics and Natural Sciences (SMP) consists in organising, in consultation with the research tutor from the first year of study programme, implementing the required minimum of the leading programme and using the curriculum offer of SMP faculties. In addition, the student can conduct research activities under the guidance of their tutor. This model of education corresponds to the requirements of modern times, and at the same time, it is a return to the sources of the University's ideas.

Student’s life

Time spent at the university is not all about education and class participation; it is also an excellent opportunity to develop hobbies and interests. Many research societies and student organizations operate at the Jagiellonian University, including faculty- and university-wide ones. These societies allow students to spend their free time actively, gain knowledge, develop their talents, participate in engaging, unconventional projects, go on research and team-building trips, participate in conferences, and meet fellow students outside the lecture halls. Students of Studies in the Mathematics and Natural Sciences (SMP) may engage in the activities of numerous student research groups of particular faculties cooperating as part of the SMP or in the activities of the Mathematics and Natural Sciences Student Research Society at the Jagiellonian University.

Students interested in the international dimension of studying can participate in a wide variety of exchange programmes, such as Erasmus+, Utrecht Network, bilateral exchange programmes, European university Una Europa, or the domestic mobility programme called MOST.

How to make good use of your study time? Understand what moves your mind and evolve in this field. There are no unconnected areas of human interest. You are passionate about music, and at the same time, you are interested in biology - there is Bioacoustics, which examines the formation of sounds, their reception and their impact on organisms. Perhaps instead of Biology, you prefer Chemistry, and then you will be interested in Sonochemistry, investigating the effects of ultrasound on chemical reactions. You should spend your study time on developing your passions and interests. Check out the offer of various research groups; there are scientific and integration trips, team projects, scientific conferences and other events. Personally,I have always dreamed of exploring caves or the undergrounds of old castles. I realised this goal thanks to trips to count bats in these locations. There are dozens of possibilities at the Jagiellonian University to satisfy your curiosity about the world; all you need is willingness.

Admission to studies

First-cycle programmes

Admission at the Jagiellonian University is conducted electronically in the Online Application System (IRK): irk.uj.edu.pl. Admissions Office is responsible for the admission process at the Jagiellonian University. Information regarding admission to this study programme, including qualification rules, admission and tuition fee, schedule, required documents and information on final result calculation, are available on the Online Application System (IRK): irk.uj.edu.pl

Second-cycle programmes

Registration for these studies is not processed in the Online Application System (IRK). The candidate registers for one of the second-degree programmes conducted within the SMP and follows the applicable rules. A candidate who meets the requirements for second-cycle studies obtains the status of a SMP student, confirmed by the SMP Programme Council through the Head of SMP.

Transfer from other university or study programme

Transfer from other university or other study programme is possible, with the consent of the dean: after finishing a first year of studies and fulfilling additional conditions described by the Faculty Council. In case of questions regarding a transfer, contact the unit in charge of study programme directly.

Graduates

Graduates of Studies in the Mathematics and Natural Sciences (SMP) have the qualifications and competencies acquired within the leading study programme from which they obtained a bachelor's or master's degree. They should have in-depth knowledge and be characterised by high cognitive independence crucial in further scientific work. Enriching the study programme with interdisciplinary elements and supplementing the acquired knowledge with various humanities and social sciences methodology significantly increases innovativeness and scientific thinking.

The following events are conducted in Polish – to find out about the offer for English-speaking audience, please get in touch with the organizer directly. Additionally, due to the current pandemic, some faculty and university events may be canceled or conducted in a form other than that described below.

The offer of classes and events dedicated to schools, prepared by the faculties cooperating within SMP, can be found on the website Jagiellonian University faculties: offer for schools, on the sites of particular faculties and on this website – in the study programme sections.

We invite all schools to take part in the cycle of meetings "University Closer to You – visits to the Jagiellonian University". The aim of the meetings during the tours is to familiarize students with the history of our University through a rich educational offer (lectures, workshops, laboratory classes, etc.). The current programme of the event is available on the organizer's website – the Centre for Communications and Marketing of the Jagiellonian University.

The Jagiellonian Library offers tours of both the old and new parts of the building. The tour programme includes presentations on the history of the Library and the building itself, as well as a visit to the Department of Depositories. The offer of the Collegium Maius includes lessons on "The Trail of Science" and "The Trail of History and Art," as well as interactive online classes. We also invite you to explore the educational offer of the Botanical Garden, the Nature Education Centre, the Confucius Institute, and the Museum of Anatomy.
