Programme description

What does the world actually consist of? The best answer to this question can be found in the Chemistry study programme at the Jagiellonian University. But this is not the only thing they offer. Chemistry at the Jagiellonian University is primarily modern starting with the curriculum that prepares you for the challenges posed by the dynamic, constantly changing labor market, through qualified teaching staff, to teaching and research laboratories fitted with top-class equipment, often unique nationally and internationally. It is also a study programme that gives the opportunity to obtain double diplomas: the Jagiellonian University and a foreign university (part of the studies can be spent in renowned European partner research centers). Additionally – chemistry in Małopolska is the future! This science branch has been classified as one of the priority areas that will be developed in Małopolska region in the coming years. Therefore, the development of chemical companies and enterprises is expected, which will certainly be looking for high-class specialists in the field of chemical sciences – and this is what we teach here.

Student’s life

Time spent at the university is not all about education and class participation; it is also an excellent opportunity to develop hobbies and interests. Many research societies and student organizations work at the Jagiellonian University, including faculty- and university-wide ones. These societies allow students to spend their free time actively, gain knowledge, develop their talents, participate in engaging, unconventional projects, go on research and team-building trips, participate in conferences and meet fellow students outside the lecture halls. Outstanding students can apply for a scholarship and tutoring under the SciMat project.

Students interested in the international dimension of studying can participate in a wide variety of exchange programmes such as Erasmus+, CEEPUS, Utrecht Network, exchange programmes within Bilateral Agreements or European university Una Europa, or participate in a domestic mobility programme called MOST.

More than just studies

From our students

Cezary: a scientist does not have to be boring Cezary: a scientist does not have to be boring
Chemistry is a big part of my life. Studies are challenging and demanding, but they provide development and many opportunities. Working in a laboratory gives fulfillment and allows you to learn many techniques and chemical processes. (…) Science studies are about more than just numbers and formulas. The Jagiellonian University and Krakow offer many opportunities for development in every direction and do not limit you to one choice.

From our lecturers

Prof. dr hab. Małgorzata Barańska Prof. dr hab. Małgorzata Barańska
The university opens horizons, allows you to meet many valuable people, teaches high culture. It offers the possibility of education, including self-education, but under the guidance of specialists. How to make good use of your study time? Take advantage of a comprehensive offer, not only the one within a given field of study. Combine work with pleasure as this may be the most important time in our lives.

Graduates

Chemistry and the chemical industry are fundamental for the quality life of modern societies. Therefore, it is necessary to educate specialists with degrees in Chemistry, who can be employed not only in the economic sector, but also based on the knowledge of the current scientific achievements, actively participate in the implementation of modern technologies. Chemistry programme at JU is designed to educate such specialists. Graduates may work in various sectors of economy and social life, from chemical, pharmaceutical, cosmetics and food industry to industrial, chemical, diagnostic and analytical laboratories (e.g. court/forensic analytics), small-scale manufacturing, trading companies, environmental protection institutions, higher education, scientific and research and development institutions. Students of the second-cycle programme have the opportunity to participate in additional classes preparing for obtaining authorization to teach chemistry. There is a Careers and Promotion Office working at the Faculty of Chemistry.

What alumni say about us

Alumni Stories: Agnieszka Tajchert Alumni Stories: Agnieszka Tajchert
Thanks to chemistry, I was able to go to the USA for an internship, where I not only developed my worldview, but also improved my language skills, learned to work in international groups. This, in turn, helped me decide to start doctoral studies in Switzerland. I know that all my choices are related and go well together. Each of my decisions has contributed to the fact that I work in my profession and I am satisfied.

Alumni stories: Sebastian Błaszkiewicz Alumni stories: Sebastian Błaszkiewicz
I believe that studying science provides great value for business. I really appreciate the fact that we were expected to gain a thorough understanding of problems, to look for solutions rather than learn things by heart. I believe that my studies taught me to think, analyse and smoothly navigate through a huge amount of data.
