Programme description

Do you know that Spanish is one of the three most frequently used languages in the world and inhabitants of most of the continents use Spanish as their first or second official language? For this reason learning Spanish is a good choice with future prospects. Upon completion of a study programme graduates acquire knowledge of Spanish at the C1 level (first-cycle programme) and the C2 level (second-cycle programme). That’s just one of the reasons for studying Spanish Philology!

The study programme covers courses in linguistics and literary studies as well as other areas relevant not only to philological education but also possibly wide knowledge of Spanish-speaking countries. Students will be offered courses like translation studies, didactics of a foreign language or knowledge of culture, divided into obligatory and optional courses.

Since 30 years we have offered an official course in the Catalan language at the Ramon Llulla Institute thanks to which students may pass official exams in the Catalan language free of charge at all levels, participate in summer courses in Barcelona, Andorra and Balearics as well as take part in various translation workshops and projects. There is also Centro de Estudos Galegos which has operated in the Instute for 20 years. The institution popularises knowledge of the language and culture of Spanish Galicia. Students who learn the Galician language may go to attend Galician summer courses organised in Santiago de Compostela as well as contribute to cultural events popularising knowledge of this region.

Information regarding Faculty

Although it appeared in the structure of the university in 1951, the Faculty of Philology offers study programmes (fields of research) which have existed for a long time and tradition of which dates back by even five centuries. The Faculty offers over 20 philologies but teaches as many as 50 languages! It was granted the A category by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, study programmes conducted at the Faculty lead in rankings prepared by the Education Foundation “Perspektywy”, and talented students join the prestigious Diamond Grant program winners.

Studies at the Faculty of Philology have enjoyed unflagging popularity for years, allowing graduates to work, among others, as a translator, editor in publishing houses, teacher in schools, journalist, or employee of diplomatic or special services. Internships and paid internships offered by companies cooperating with the Faculty together with vocational courses and certified training, available to all interested students, can help in smooth entry to the labour market. Studies at the Faculty of Philology also include classes in small groups and the opportunity to work in more than 20 students’ academic associations.

The Faculty consists of 8 institutes, Spanish Philology study programme is conducted in the Institute of Romance Studies. The main units of the Faculty of Philology are located in the centre of Kraków in the modern complex of buildings Collegium Paderevianum equipped with language laboratories and leisure zones. The library of the Faculty of Philology ensures access to national and worldwide sources of information – it is a modern information centre concerning foreign philologies, history of literature, linguistics, methods of teaching, history, culture, art and translation studies.

Curriculum overview

Programme curriculum consists of information regarding classes in which you will take part while studying at this field of study. The programme provides data on classes in particular semesters, which of them are compulsory or optional, which of them end with an exam, and which do not. Each class has its own syllabus – a description of contents of the class.

Student’s life

Time spent at the university is not all about education and class participation; it is also an excellent opportunity to develop hobbies and interests. Many research societies and student organizations operate at the Jagiellonian University, including faculty- and university-wide ones. These societies allow students to spend their free time actively, gain knowledge, develop their talents, participate in engaging, unconventional projects, go on research and team-building trips, participate in conferences, and meet fellow students outside the lecture halls. There are more than 20 student associations at the Faculty of Philology, f.e. Iberist Scientific Circle. Students academic associations in the Institute of Romance Studies cooperate both with foundations in organising cultural and popularisation events and with the publishing industry. Students may also be engaged in francophone student theatre “Les Capricieuses” which each year prepares performances open to the public outside the Univeristy, as well as be part of the editing team of the “Roman” journal by publishing translations of modern writers’ works, essays, linguistic and literary papers or studies presenting various cultural phenomena of Romance language area.

Students interested in the international dimension of studying can participate in a wide variety of exchange programmes, such as Erasmus+, CEEPUS, Utrecht Network, bilateral exchange programmes, European university Una Europa, or the domestic mobility programme called MOST.

Transfer from other university or study programme

Transfer from other university or other study programme is possible, with the consent of the dean: after finishing a first year of studies and fulfilling additional conditions described by the Faculty Council. Graduates

Graduates of Spanish Philology may be employed in schools, companies, travel agencies, publishing houses or international institutions. They can work as translators in large corporations, European institutions, international organisations, the tourism sector as well as culture popularising institutions. Another important aspect is the education of Spanish teachers as, according to statistics,  popularity of Spanish has recently significantly increased in Polish schools.

Offer for school

The following events are conducted in Polish – to find out about the offer for English-speaking audience, please get in touch with the organizer directly. Additionally, due to the current pandemic, some faculty and university events may be canceled or conducted in a form other than that described below.

We invite all schools to a series of meetings, "University Closer to you – trips to the Jagiellonian University." The purpose of the sessions as part of the tours is to familiarize students with our university's history through a broad educational offer (lectures, workshops, laboratory classes, etc.). The current program of the event is available on the organizer's website - Centre for Communications and Marketing.

The Jagiellonian Library allows you to visit the old and new parts of the building. The tour program includes presentations of information about the history of the Library and the building itself and a tour of the Warehouse Department. The offer of Collegium Maius consists of the "Traces of science" and "Traces of history and art" lessons as well as interactive online classes. We also invite you to familiarize yourself with the educational offer of: the Botanic Garden, the Nature Education Center, the Confucius Institute, and the Museum of the Department of Anatomy UJ CM.
