Are you passionate about literature, culture and language, and modern media are not a mystery to you? Do you want to study Polish studies, but are you afraid that such studies will not guarantee the acquisition of valuable practical skills? Editorial Studies programme at the Faculty of Polish Studies of the Jagiellonian University combines knowledge and skills, Polish traditions and innovation. These studies transfer modern knowledge using innovative teaching methods. You will meet famous lecturers and employees from the publishing industry, ready to share their experiences. Editorial Studies are an adventure with the city and culture – the Chair seat is right next to the picturesque main square of Kraków.

Information regarding Faculty

The Faculty of Polish Studies has category A granted by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. In 2018 two Faculty of Polish Studies students were awarded during the 'Studencki Nobel 'contest for the greatest Polish students; talented faculty students are winning the prestigious Diamond Grant programme. Study programmes at the Faculty of Polish Studies give a great chance for individual development under the supervision of the masters of modern Polish studies. The Faculty of Polish Studies has been collaborating with institutions concerned with culture and art, especially from Kraków and Małopolska province, for many years. Students engage in various activities of the Kraków Festival Office, theatres of Kraków, cultural centres and museums. The JU students' Linguistics Research Society organizes the Month of First Language – a regular project that includes the Kraków Dictation, advertisement contest, 'commentary and pitch', and linguistics workshops in schools. Particular study programmes collaborate with companies from the media sector during the realisation of the traineeships programme – the Faculty signed agreements with publishers, web portals and magazines and is responsible for the edition of 12 prestigious publications and 7 academic journals.

The Faculty of Polish Studies consists of 17 Chairs, as well as the Center for Polish Language and Culture in the World, and the School of Polish Language and Culture. The study programme is conducted by the Chair of Editorship and Auxiliary Sciences, located in the centre of Kraków. Editorial Studies programme requires access to specialist design publications, history and design theory, book market and advanced methods of working with text and graphics. It requires not only technical facilities but also access to a well-equipped library. The Faculty of Polish Studies meets both of these needs. The computer lab is equipped with stands with specialised software for text, graphics, multimedia, websites and electronic publications. It also has cameras, scanners, and mobile devices (tablets and readers).

Curriculum overview

Programme curriculum consists of information regarding classes in which you will take part while studying at this field of study. The programme provides data on classes in particular semesters, which of them are compulsory or optional, which of them end with an exam, and which do not. Each class has its own syllabus – a description of contents of the class.

Student’s life

Time spent at the university is not all about education and class participation; it is also an excellent opportunity to develop hobbies and interests. Many research societies and student organizations operate at the Jagiellonian University, including faculty- and university-wide ones. These societies allow students to spend their free time actively, gain knowledge, develop their talents, participate in engaging, unconventional projects, go on research and team-building trips, participate in conferences, and meet fellow students outside the lecture halls. There are many student associations at the Faculty of Polish Studies, f. e. Editors Academic Circle.

Students interested in the international dimension of studying can participate in a wide variety of exchange programmes, such as Erasmus+, Utrecht Network, bilateral exchange programmes, European university Una Europa, or the domestic mobility programme called MOST.

Transfer from other university or study programme

Transfer from other university or other study programme is possible, with the consent of the dean: after finishing a first year of studies and fulfilling additional conditions described by the Faculty Council. Graduates

Editorial Studies combine education with experience. Graduates of the Jagiellonian University are highly professional and valued by employers because they cope well with tougher tasks: solid Polish language education makes them editors and designers better than those whose education is limited to strictly professional skills.

During their studies, students undergo a professional internship in a publishing house or advertising agency. Graduates find employment in publishing houses, online portals, design companies and advertising agencies, and in setting up companies providing design and publishing services, take up jobs in professions requiring editorial, graphic, design competencies, etc. They are prepared for the work as the editor of the publishing house. Polish literature and language knowledge allow them to perform this profession with competence based on general culture and erudition.

Offer for school

The following events are conducted in Polish – to find out about the offer for English-speaking audience, please get in touch with the organizer directly. Additionally, due to the current pandemic, some faculty and university events may be canceled or conducted in a form other than that described below.

We invite all schools to a series of meetings, "University Closer to you – trips to the Jagiellonian University." The purpose of the sessions as part of the tours is to familiarize students with our university's history through a broad educational offer (lectures, workshops, laboratory classes, etc.). The current program of the event is available on the organizer's website - Centre for Communications and Marketing.

The Jagiellonian Library allows you to visit the old and new parts of the building. The tour program includes presentations of information about the history of the Library and the building itself and a tour of the Warehouse Department. The offer of Collegium Maius consists of the "Traces of science" and "Traces of history and art" lessons as well as interactive online classes. We also invite you to familiarize yourself with the educational offer of: the Botanic Garden, the Nature Education Center, the Confucius Institute, and the Museum of the Department of Anatomy UJ CM.
