Programme description

Studies in Theatre is the only first-cycle study programme at the Jagiellonian University in theatre knowledge education in humanities. This programme transfers knowledge in the history of theatrical forms, genres, and conventions of old and contemporary staging and acting styles; it shares knowledge about theatrical life institutions and copyright and intellectual property principles. By choosing Studies in Theatre, you gain orientation in the most important phenomena in contemporary theatre; you learn concepts in the field of performance art and the history of Polish and universal drama and dramatic genres. Students direct their knowledge from the second year by choosing courses in one of two modules: theatre or performance, which they can expand on in second-cycle studies.

Information regarding Faculty

The Faculty of Polish Studies has category A granted by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. In 2018 two Faculty of Polish Studies students were awarded during the 'Studencki Nobel 'contest for the greatest Polish students; talented faculty students are winning the prestigious Diamond Grant programme. Study programmes at the Faculty of Polish Studies give a great chance for individual development under the supervision of the masters of modern Polish studies. The Faculty of Polish Studies has been collaborating with institutions concerned with culture and art, especially from Kraków and Małopolska province, for many years. Students engage in various activities of the Kraków Festival Office, theatres of Kraków, cultural centres and museums. The JU students' Linguistics Research Society organizes the Month of First Language – a regular project that includes the Kraków Dictation, advertisement contest, 'commentary and pitch', and linguistics workshops in schools. Particular study programmes collaborate with companies from the media sector during the realisation of the traineeships programme – the Faculty signed agreements with publishers, web portals and magazines and is responsible for the edition of 12 prestigious publications and 7 academic journals.

The Faculty of Polish Studies consists of 17 Chairs, the Center for Polish Language and Culture in the World, and the School of Polish Language and Culture, Theatre Studies are conducted in the Chair in Theatre and Drama (in collaboration with the Chair in Performance Studies). Most classes take place at Gołębia Street, where the editorial office of Didaskalia. Gazeta Teatralna (theatre journal) and the theatre room are situated. The theatre room has basic lighting equipment, a sound system and a dressing room. It is a place to present pieces prepared during workshops and implement projects of the students of the Student Association of Theatrologists.

Curriculum overview

Programme curriculum consists of information regarding classes in which you will take part while studying at this field of study. The programme provides data on classes in particular semesters, which of them are compulsory or optional, which of them end with an exam, and which do not. Each class has its own syllabus – a description of contents of the class.

Student’s life

Time spent at the university is not all about education and class participation; it is also an excellent opportunity to develop hobbies and interests. Many research societies and student organizations operate at the Jagiellonian University, including faculty- and university-wide ones. These societies allow students to spend their free time actively, gain knowledge, develop their talents, participate in engaging, unconventional projects, go on research and team-building trips, participate in conferences, and meet fellow students outside the lecture halls. There are many student activities associations at the Faculty of Polish Studies, f.e. Student Association of Theatrologists, which organises scientific conferences and creates opportunities for students to implement their artistic projects (in this way, for example, Theatr 74). Theatre journal Didaskalia. Gazeta Teatralna, run by the Chair in Theatre and Drama academics, is a place where students of Theatre Studies can take part in internships, developing the skills of proofreading and editing texts, submitting and online writing. Internship in the editorial office is also a form of learning how to write articles about the theatre and it allows publishing in the newspaper.

Students interested in the international dimension of studying can participate in a wide variety of exchange programmes, such as Erasmus+, Utrecht Network, bilateral exchange programmes, European university Una Europa, or the domestic mobility programme called MOST.

Transfer from other university or study programme

Transfer from other university or other study programme is possible, with the consent of the dean: after finishing a first year of studies and fulfilling additional conditions described by the Faculty Council. Graduates

Broad basic knowledge about theatre and performance, combined with practical skills in theatrical criticism, analysis of artistic and cultural performances and cultural management, gives the competence to fulfil professional duties in cultural activities. Those who have completed this programme can work in theatres (literary-dramaturgical secretariats, promotion departments) and the media (theatre journalism). They also have a scientific education enabling them to undertake second-cycle studies in humanities, especially Theatre Studies and Performance Studies.

Offer for school

The following events are conducted in Polish – to find out about the offer for English-speaking audience, please get in touch with the organizer directly. Additionally, due to the current pandemic, some faculty and university events may be canceled or conducted in a form other than that described below.

We invite all schools to a series of meetings, "University Closer to you – trips to the Jagiellonian University." The purpose of the sessions as part of the tours is to familiarize students with our university's history through a broad educational offer (lectures, workshops, laboratory classes, etc.). The current program of the event is available on the organizer's website - Centre for Communications and Marketing.

The Jagiellonian Library allows you to visit the old and new parts of the building. The tour program includes presentations of information about the history of the Library and the building itself and a tour of the Warehouse Department. The offer of Collegium Maius consists of the "Traces of science" and "Traces of history and art" lessons as well as interactive online classes. We also invite you to familiarize yourself with the educational offer of: the Botanic Garden, the Nature Education Center, the Confucius Institute, and the Museum of the Department of Anatomy UJ CM.
