Programme description

Information Management at the Institute of Information Studies is for all people with broad horizons, during which knowledge of the relationship between people and information, as well as the achievements of social communication and media sciences and other disciplines, are combined with the education of practical skills and the development of competencies necessary for the professional management of information in various professional contexts. These studies broaden the understanding of information management's historical, social, and cultural context and intensify participation in multiple forms of cultural life. Students will learn the principles and tools of info brokerage and open-source intelligence (OSIN), professional sources of information, ways of effectively searching for, developing and organising information resources, and learning to notice and interpret various information behaviours of people. Information regarding Faculty

The Faculty of Management and Social Communication has the category A granted by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education and outstanding rating awarded by the Polish Accreditation Committee (PKA). The variety of fields of study programmes conducted by the Faculty makes this unit one of the best interdisciplinary faculties of the Jagiellonian University.

The premises of the Faculty of Management and Social Communication are located on the territory of the Campus of the 600th Anniversary of the JU Revival. The Faculty is located in a modern building that consists of well equipped lecture halls, classes and computer rooms. Studies at the Faculty of Management and Social Communication are known for: exceptional research and didactic staff; unique fields of studies and original study programmes not available at other Polish universities; possibility to get a double degree thank to agreements with European universities; collaboration with the business sector; comfortable conditions for studying surrounded by the beautiful and green campus, UJOT TV television and UJOT.FM radio; various research societies which reflect the versatility of research conducted at the Faculty and its didactic offer. The study programme is offered by the Institute of Information Studies, which is a part of the Faculty of Management and Social Communication. Students have access to the modern library of the Faculty the book collection is of which is constantly supplied with the newest books (in Polish and English).

Student’s life

Time spent at the university is not all about education and class participation; it is also an excellent opportunity to develop hobbies and interests. Many research societies and student organizations operate at the Jagiellonian University, including faculty- and university-wide ones. These societies allow students to spend their free time actively, gain knowledge, develop their talents, participate in engaging, unconventional projects, go on research and team-building trips, participate in conferences, and meet fellow students outside the lecture halls. There are many student research groups at the Faculty of Management and Social Communication.

Students interested in the international dimension of studying can participate in a wide variety of exchange programmes, such as Erasmus+, Utrecht Network, bilateral exchange programmes, European university Una Europa, or the domestic mobility programme called MOST.

Information Management is an opportunity to acquire solid practical skills desired in a vast labour market, creating a fundamental basis for the development of one's professional career in various directions:

  • information management in organisations, including design, evaluation and maintenance of information solutions used in companies or institutions, management of electronic document circulation, creation and management of digital collections and archives, digitisation of information resources and their publication in the network environment - this is a job as an information management specialist or information manager;
  • information services for business, science, education, administration or the needs of everyday life – preparation for work in modern professions of information broker, researcher, an employee of business intelligence or information analytics, as well as in units implementing public access to information: libraries or various information centres;
  • design and evaluation of products and information systems - these are the basis for the development of one's career as a UX specialist or web designer;
  • transfer of information in society – organising, diagnosing and implementing the flow of information between different stakeholders in science, technology, economy and culture.

Information Management prepares not only for the development of one's professional career but also for independent research, which has long ceased to be a helpful skill only in the academic environment and allows you to develop professionally, improve and gain an advantage in the labour market in various sectors of the economy.

Offer for school

The following events are conducted in Polish – to find out about the offer for English-speaking audience, please get in touch with the organizer directly. Additionally, due to the current pandemic, some faculty and university events may be canceled or conducted in a form other than that described below.

The Institute of Information Studies invites secondary school students to the following workshops:

  • Open-source Intelligence (OSINT) – an example of a strategy for searching for information for business purposes using specialised methods and sources will be presented. Briefly, education in the field of "Information Management" will be discussed
  • User experience design in the design of systems, products and information services – the most critical determinants of the user experience design approach will be presented. An example of the practical application of this approach in the design of an information product will be offered. Education in "Information Management" will be briefly discussed.

We invite all schools to take part in the cycle of meetings "University Closer to You – visits to the Jagiellonian University". The aim of the meetings during the tours is to familiarize students with the history of our University through a rich educational offer (lectures, workshops, laboratory classes, etc.). The current programme of the event is available on the organizer's website – the Centre for Communications and Marketing of the Jagiellonian University.

The Jagiellonian Library offers tours of both the old and new parts of the building. The tour programme includes presentations on the history of the Library and the building itself, as well as a visit to the Department of Depositories. The offer of the Collegium Maius includes lessons on "The Trail of Science" and "The Trail of History and Art," as well as interactive online classes. We also invite you to explore the educational offer of the Botanical Garden, the Nature Education Centre, the Confucius Institute, and the Museum of Anatomy.
