Programme description

New programme in 2026/27 academic year

Central European Romanian Studies is an innovative, international joint Master’s degree programme offered by Jagiellonian University and the West University of Timișoara. It is a unique interdisciplinary programme on both the national and Central European scale, combining advanced Romanian studies with a broader reflection on the cultural, social, and historical realities of Central Europe.

The programme lasts four semesters and leads to the award of a double Master’s degree issued by both partner universities. Courses are taught in Romanian and delivered in a hybrid format (on-site and online). An integral component of the programme is mandatory academic mobility, including at least one study period at the partner institution. The curriculum integrates linguistic, literary, translation, and cultural studies with intercultural communication, narrative analysis, digital humanities tools, and the design of innovative forms of cultural dissemination.

A distinctive feature of the programme is project-based learning, implemented through international team projects involving students from both universities, inspired by Romanian culture and the socio-historical context of Central Europe. Students also benefit from individual academic tutoring, which supports the development of independent research interests. The programme is addressed to students from Poland and Central Europe as well as from Romanian-speaking countries (Romania and Moldova) and forms part of the Jagiellonian University’s internationalisation strategy, strengthening its position as a regional leader in Romanian and Central European studies.

Information regarding Faculty

The Central European Romanian Studies programme is delivered in cooperation between two renowned academic institutions:

  • Jagiellonian University
  • and the West University of Timișoara (UVT)

This partnership brings together many years of research and teaching experience in Romanian studies, Central European studies, and interdisciplinary humanities, creating a unique educational environment with a truly international character.

At Jagiellonian University, the programme is offered by the Institute of Romance Philology, which is part of the Faculty of Philology. Degree programmes at the Faculty of Philology have enjoyed enduring popularity for many years and prepare graduates for careers such as translator, editor in publishing houses, school teacher, journalist, or employee of diplomatic or special services. Entry into the labour market is facilitated by internships and paid placements offered by companies cooperating with the Faculty, as well as by professional courses and certified training available to all interested students. Studies at the Faculty of Philology also offer classes in small groups and opportunities to engage in the activities of more than 20 student research societies. The main facilities of the Faculty of Philology are located in the centre of Kraków, in the modern Collegium Paderevianum complex, equipped with language laboratories and relaxation areas. The Faculty of Philology Library provides access to national and international information resources, serving as a modern information centre in the fields of foreign philologies, literary history, linguistics, language teaching methodology, history, culture, art, and translation studies.

Student’s life

Time spent at the university is not all about education and class participation; it is also an excellent opportunity to develop hobbies and interests. Many research societies and student organizations operate at the Jagiellonian University, including faculty- and university-wide ones. These societies allow students to spend their free time actively, gain knowledge, develop their talents, participate in engaging, unconventional projects, go on research and team-building trips, participate in conferences, and meet fellow students outside the lecture halls. There are more than 20 student associations at the Faculty of Philology, f.e. Scientific Circle of Romanianists. Students’ academic associations in the Institute of Romance Studies cooperate both with foundations in organising cultural and popularisation events and with the publishing industry. Students may also be part of the editing team of the “Roman” journal by publishing translations of modern writers’ works, essays, linguistic and literary papers or studies presenting various cultural phenomena of the Romance language area.

Students interested in the international dimension of studying can participate in a wide variety of exchange programmes, such as Erasmus+, CEEPUS, Utrecht Network, bilateral exchange programmes, European university Una Europa, or the domestic mobility programme called MOST.
