Programme description

Drug Discovery and Development (DDD) is a programme focused on all aspects of identifying and introducing new medicines. Its mission is to deliver high-level specialists, equipped with a highly applied scientific basis for discovery and development of novel pharmacotherapeutics, combined with focused, real-life practical skills. This degree provides a solid grounding in pharmaceutical sciences, together with an opportunity to specialize in a particular drug discovery and development area. The first semester is devoted to provide a basic understanding of drug discovery and development as well as key chemical, biological and pathophysiological aspects, relevant to drug research. The second semester provides a wide and well-balanced training in pharmaceutical sciences, which serves as a basis for further, specialized skills development. The third and fourth semesters are focused on one of the three leading areas: Medicinal Chemistry, Experimental Pharmacology and Model Based Drug Development.

Information regarding Faculty

The Faculty of Pharmacy is the best one in Poland, as it combines the tradition and modernity which is proper in case of dynamism and development of exact science. It has the A+ category granted by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, programmes conducted at the Faculty lead in rankings prepared by the Education Foundation “Perspektywy”. Fields of studies conducted at the Faculty include: pharmacy, cosmetology and medical analytics. The research conducted focuses on the search for new and innovative forms of medicines, assessment of the toxicity of medicines and issues concerning biotechnology and pharmacology. The Faculty consists of 16 research and didactic units, including 10 Chairs. The Museum of Pharmacy, the Garden of Medicinal Plants and the Animal House are also the part of the Faculty. Students have an access to the resources of the Medical Library and the Jagiellonian Library.

Curriculum overview

Student’s life

Students interested in the international dimension of studying can participate in a wide variety of exchange programmes such as Erasmus+, CEEPUS, Utrecht Network, exchange programmes within Bilateral Agreements or European university Una Europa, or participate in a domestic mobility programme called MOSTUM.

Graduates

Graduates of Drug Discovery and Development will learn how new medicines are sought, identified, developed, manufactured and tested, along with the most important aspects of regulatory processes, necessary for their formal approval as drug products. Additionally, they will be equipped with management skills and language expertise, supporting their future employment in the worldwide pharma-biotech industry, regulatory agencies or drug research centers.
